Overview
This course is an introduction to foundational drawing elements and conceptual drawing practices open to all levels of drawing or artistic experience. Beginning with the elements of line, shape, value, perspective, and structure we will build and apply a pictural syntax in the first half of the course. The second half of the course will delve into contemporary methods including basic printmaking processes, field drawing (or drawing as note taking), and a collaborative zine for the final project. The class aims to make drawing accessible and highlight its similarity to writing in its ability to record thought. Readings will include How Art Can Be Thought: A Handbook for Change, by Allan deSouza and selected writings by Hito Steyerl, Patricio Davila, and Kameelah Janan Rasheed. No prior drawing experience is required. Enrollment is limited to 16 students.
