Overview

Destinations:

Ovid’s Metamorphoses (3 AD) is one of the greatest works of ancient literature as well as a literary masterpiece of breathtaking formal innovation. In this course, we will do a deep reading of this “epic of changing forms,” as we explore issues including Ovid’s relation to the Virgilian and Homeric epic traditions; his fusion of legend and history in interpreting the Roman past; his capacity for “world-building”: his representation of gender, sexuality, and other key forms of identity; and much more. Overall, our goal will be to unlock the mysteries of Ovid`s poetry and discover the richness of his ancient culture, history, and world. The course is open to all, with no prior knowledge of Ovid or his work required.
