Overview

Destinations:

This course is an introduction to the foundational tenets of the material and conceptual practice of drawing. We will begin with readings and exercises covering the building blocks of drawing practice: line, volume, gesture, isometric and perspectival space and value, and then follow these topics into broader questions regarding the metaphorical substrate of drawing and its relationship to diagrams, timekeeping and language. Our work will culminate in a final project that asks students to document and compose places and figures encountered over a set duration of time in a spatial and temporal panorama.

This class is to provide an entry point to navigating the form of drawing as both makers and viewers, providing students with the tools necessary to initiate lifelong practices of inquiry informed by drawing’s conceptual and material methods.

In our journey together, we will study and discuss the work of Albrecht Durer, Alberto Giacometti, Thomas Eakins, Georgio Morandi, Agnes Martin, Cy Twombly and many others with selected readings from Jean-Luc Nancy, Amy Sillman, and Rosalind Krauss. The course is open to people of all experience levels, from seasoned drawers to those just starting out.
