Overview

Destinations:

Hannah Arendt (1906 - 1975) often cited Cato the Elder (234BC - 149BC) as follows: "Never is he more active than when he does nothing, never is he less alone than when he is by himself.”

In her short essay, “Void,” Iris Murdoch (1919 - 1999) observes, “There is nothing that cannot be broken or taken from us. Ultimately we are nothing. A reminder of our mortality, a recognition of contingency, must at least make us humble. Are we not then closer to the deep mystery of being human? When we find our ordinary pursuits trivial and senseless are we not right to do so? The experience of emptiness may be a shock soon forgotten, or a lifelong reminder, a moral inspiration, even a liberation, a kind of joy….”

This course will probe and explore, through readings and discussions, the variety of experiences associated with nihilism, emptiness, void, non-being (e.g., Sartre’s “le Néant”), and annihilation, in philosophy, psychology, mysticism, Zen Buddhism, literature, film and music.
