COURSE DESCRIPTION
Yale Alumni College invites you to register for a special lecture-based course featuring collaborative historical scholarship developed by Yale curators and New Haven historians. This six-part series, takes place in Greenwich, CT, and is co-taught by four Yale-affiliated instructors: cultural organizer Frank Mitchell ’89 M.A.; the Beinecke Library’s Charles E. Warner Jr. and Michael Morand ’87 ’93 M.Div., a New Haven city historian; and graphic designer David Jon Walker ’23 MFA.
Join fellow intellectually curious participants to learn the history of people of African descent in Connecticut, with a focus on stories of ordinary people and extraordinary resilience. Starting in the colonial period and spanning the 19th century and early 20th century, the series will shine light on little-known histories of New Haven residents, along with students and workers at Yale who persevered and excelled through dynamic eras of struggle and change. This series builds upon two recent New Haven exhibitions: The New Haven Museum’s Shining Light on Truth: Yale, New Haven, and Slavery and the Yale Schwarzman Center`s Shining Light on Truth: Black Lives at Yale and in New Haven, along with the recent book, Yale and Slavery: A History (Yale University Press, 2024), and generations of community-led history collected in and around New Haven.
COURSE FORMAT
This is an interactive in-person lecture series that meets weekly over 6 weeks at the Boys and Girls Club of Greenwich, CT.
Weekly reading or other forms of materials may be assigned. There are no papers or grades. This course does not offer any credits or certificates. This course is intended for learning for the love of learning.

Registrants will receive access to the course website about two weeks before the course starts.
COURSE CANCELLATION POLICY
Registrants can cancel and receive a full refund up to September 21. After September 21, there will be no refunds issued. Yale Alumni College courses are subject to schedule changes as well as cancellations. If Yale Alumni College must cancel any course prior to its start due to low enrollment, you will be notified of this by the cancellation date. Upon cancellation of a course, registrants may transfer their registration to another available course or have the registration fee fully refunded. In the event of a disruption to the original course schedule, including but not limited to; Professor absence, hazardous weather conditions, or local travel restrictions, Yale Alumni College will do its best to reschedule the missed class for the week immediately following the original end date at the same course time and day.
