Overview
Our country’s history has been shaped by many movements but perhaps one of the most significant is the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s. This carefully designed program, commissioned by The Henry Koerner Center for Emeritus Faculty, is open to Yale Alumni Academy participants and faculty fellows of the center. It traces the movement’s roots, and visits the major sites of historical significance from Jackson, Mississippi to the heart of the Delta, to Birmingham, Selma, and Montgomery, Alabama. Highlights include the Equal Justice Initiative and the Legacy Museum, the 16th Street Baptist Church and numerous visits with witnesses, legendary leaders, and participants in the movement. Framed within the civil rights story are the histories of the music and cuisine of the American South. Some of the most powerful and inspired creations of both Southern sound and cuisine were born out of the struggle for civil rights, and today they continue to evolve as new populations, ingredients, and instruments influence regional culture.
