Peru’s multiplicity of archaeological sites and architectural marvels makes it one of the world’s seminal destinations for cultural explorers. With Yale scholar, Ana María Durán Calisto as your faculty host and guide, you’ll land in Lima and venture along the northern coast on a journey that includes stops in Barranca, Trujillo, Chiclayo and Pachacmamac. You’ll be stimulated by an array of world-class museums, picturesque villages and cities, and astonishing sites.

With roots that extend back to the fourth millennia BCE, this land gave birth to ancient civilizations such as the Norte Chico, one of the oldest in the Americas. Before the colonial invasion by Spain, it was the cradle of the vast Inca empire, the largest Pre-Columbian state. But our explorations will take us deeper as we experience the architectural legacies of a long line of rich and fascinating peoples such as the Chavin, Mochica, Chimú, Wari, and Ichma. Program highlights include:

  • Uncover the historic city center of Lima, a bustling modern metropolis and UNESCO World Heritage site, filled with magnificent Spanish colonial architecture, as well as treasures of the ancient world including over 350 ancient ceremonial complexes, the Huaca Pucllana pyramid, and other legacies of the Lima and Wari cultures.

  • Visit the Larco Museum, with its comprehensive collection of more than 45,000 exhibits spanning over five thousand years of Peruvian history including a striking display of ceramic items from the Mochica culture.

  • Tour Pachacamac, a key pilgrimage site dating back to 700 CE, and site of the temple to the pre-Incan sun god believed to be the creator of the world.

  • Discover the pre-Columbian marvel Chan Chan, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Considered the largest adobe city in the world, it once served as the capital of the Chimú Kingdom.
