Overview
France is arguably a pilgrimage destination for all students of architecture. Its heritage marks the founding of the world’s first academy of architecture and the emergence of both gothic and medieval cities as well as later emblematic feats: the Eiffel Tower, the brutalist creations of Le Corbusier, the reimagination of landscape and form embodied in the work of Jean Nouvel. This journey through Southern France has been designed by Professor Eeva-Liisa Pelkonen as a unique experience of the myriad manifestations of brilliance and inspiration in French architecture. Together with fellow Yale alumni and friends old and new, you’ll embark from Paris on a route that takes you to Marseille, Nice, Monte Carlo, Avignon, Lyon, and more. Highlights include:
- Visit the The Foundation Maeght in St Paul de Vence a private museum, designed by Josep Lluís Sert, that fuses art and architecture, showcasing the Mediterranean landscape in its midst and housing the collections of Marguerite and Aimé Maeght.
- Explore the city of Lyon, UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its Roman district and Renaissance district as well as modern urban structures that define its place at the confluence of the Rhône and the Saône rivers.
- Discover the capital of the Côte d’Azur, Marseille, its history stretching back thousands of years and its future being remade under the ambitious urban renewal project, Euroméditerranée, which aims to establish an eco-city and transform the city’s infrastructure, as well as its cultural and public spaces.
