Overview

Destinations:

Experience a land where memory is encoded into the very stones of its landscape; where castles rise from sea-swept cliffs and enduring traditions shape its Celtic soul. In Wales and Scotland, living myths form an unbroken connection to an ancient past. Developed in collaboration with faculty host, Yale Professor Roderick McIntosh, the itinerary spotlights archaeology, Celtic heritage, and dramatic natural beauty. From the rugged coastlines of Pembrokeshire to the mist-shrouded glens of the Scottish Highlands, this thoughtfully paced program traces human experience across millennia. You’ll explore Neolithic burial chambers and Iron Age villages, medieval fortresses and Gothic cathedrals, Enlightenment cities and Highland battlefields—each revealing how people have shaped, and been shaped by Celtic Britain’s land and sea.

Begin in Wales, a country with its own unique language and identity. Traversing the length of the country from South to North, you’ll tour the Pembrokeshire coast, Snowdonia, Conwy Valley, and the isle of Anglesey. Visit UNESCO World Heritage site castles, Conwy and Caernarfon. Venture back in time at Iron Age hill forts, expanding your understanding of how Celtic peoples lived and constructed their fortified villages. Stand before the haunting Neolithic monument, Pentre Ifan, where mystery still surrounds its ancient links with Stonehenge.

Along the breathtaking Welsh Pembrokeshire coast, you’ll stop at St. David’s Cathedral, a storied destination of Catholic pilgrimage in the Medieval era. Situated in Britain’s smallest city, its awe-inspiring beauty is matched only by its serenity. Your final stop in Wales is Wrexham, where the burial site of Elihu Yale is located.

Crossing into Scotland by coach, you’ll arrive in Edinburgh, with its Old and New Towns, national museum, and striking modern parliament. Following a day in the country’s capital, you journey into the heart of the Scottish Highlands. You’ll see St. Andrews, birthplace of golf and home to one of Europe’s oldest universities. Then heading north, you’ll stop in whisky country for a tasting at a traditional distillery.

In the Highlands, the landscape grows more elemental. Explore prehistoric cairns, clan strongholds, and iconic castles including Eilean Donan and Urquhart, perched above the legendary waters of Loch Ness. You’ll cruise the loch itself, a chance to contemplate its folklore among intellectually curious companions. At Culloden, reflect on the final Jacobite battle that forever altered Highland life, and gain deeper insight into rural traditions at the Highland Folk Museum.

The program culminates amid the towering peaks and deep valleys of Glencoe, a place of such staggering beauty, it served as a backdrop for films like Harry Potter and James Bond, Skyfall. Your program concludes in Edinburgh where a final night affords the opportunity relish the company of friends old and new before your onward journey home.

Throughout this program, you’ll stay in carefully selected hotels; from elegant country houses and redesigned castles to refined urban retreats. Expert local guides bring history vividly to life through storytelling that goes beyond dates and dynasties, revealing the Celtic cultural resilience that defines Wales and Scotland—each with its own unique history.
