Overview

Destinations:

Venture to the “Rooftop of the World” to explore the majestic Himalayas and the ancient kingdoms of Nepal and Bhutan. Until the 1960s, the Himalayan Kingdoms were virtually cut off from one another and the outside world. These starkly beautiful countries have flourished in the isolation of the Himalayas, offering visitors a richness of religious and cultural traditions and an amazing diversity of art and architecture. This program provides rare insight into the beauty and cultural diversity of the Himalayan Mountain range and its people.

Begin your experience in Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal set in a mountain valley that serves as a crossroads of ancient Asian civilizations. View the magnificent Himalayas during a flightseeing excursion (weather permitting) and experience the most imposing mountain range in the world from a bird’s eye view, including views of Mount Everest, rising more than 29,000 feet above sea level. While in Nepal, see many UNESCO World Heritage Sites highlighted in Patan and Bhaktapur.

Continue to Bhutan, a country that strictly limits the number of visitors allowed each year and enjoy ten days of learning and emersion. Bhutan’s culture is warmly hospitable, and the scenery is astonishingly beautiful. Fascinating dzongs (fortresses), breathtaking chortens (religious structures), and the incomparable Tiger’s Nest Monastery provide a truly unforgettable cap to the program.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

From vibrant Kathmandu to the mountain landscapes and monasteries of Bhutan, this program offers an immersive journey through two of South Asia’s most culturally rich and visually stunning destinations. Designed for curious, engaged travelers, the itinerary balances meaningful exploration with access to places that few visitors reach. The information below is shared to help you understand the nature of the program and prepare comfortably for the experience ahead, so you can decide whether it’s the right fit for you and travel with confidence.

Travel takes place at moderate elevations—approximately 4,600 feet in Kathmandu and 7,000 feet in Bhutan. While altitude-related symptoms are uncommon at these heights, some participants may notice mild effects such as headache, fatigue, or changes in sleep, and higher elevations can affect existing health conditions.

The program is active and thoughtfully paced, with some early starts and full travel days. Daily sightseeing typically includes one to three miles of walking over uneven terrain, including stairs, cobblestones, and stone paths.

An optional highlight is the hike to Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest) in Bhutan—a memorable and rewarding excursion of about four miles roundtrip, taking 4–6 hours and reaching an altitude of approximately 10,240 feet. Participants may ride a mule or horse to the halfway point or choose to opt out.

Reaching remote regions may involve occasional longer motorcoach journeys on winding or bumpy roads, allowing access to distinctive landscapes and cultural sites, and sometimes lasting up to seven hours at elevations of up to 12,000 feet.

Accommodations and meals are simple and comfortable, reflecting local standards. Some hotels do not have elevators, restrooms in rural areas may be basic, and participants should be prepared to manage their own luggage at certain points. Medical care is more limited than Western standards, and any special dietary or medical needs should be shared in advance.

This program is best suited for travelers who enjoy active exploration and are comfortable embracing the rewarding realities of travel in mountainous regions
