Overview

Destinations:

The legacy of great performances is alive and well at Yale where a passion for drama is in our DNA. Experience the beauty of opera in the picturesque town of Cooperstown, NY on the Yale Alumni College`s third annual Opera-themed trip. Led by Yale Professor of Music, Gundula Kreuzer, this journey includes four captivating performances at the 2023 Glimmerglass Opera Festival.

Day one begins with Gounod`s timeless romance of Romeo and Juliet. The following day will be Puccini`s heart-wrenching masterpiece La bohème, followed by Handel`s epic Rinaldo on day three. The trip concludes with Bernstein`s comedic masterpiece Candide. Enjoy the open-air design and magnificent acoustics of the theater which allows for each opera to be heard crisp, clear, and unamplified--as it was intended.

In between performances, take time to explore the charming village of Cooperstown, home to the National Baseball Hall of Fame, as well as museums and art galleries. The group will attend daily group discussions, delving deeper into the opera’s themes, historical and cultural significance, and production techniques. Special guests from the Glimmerglass Festival, including Robert Ainsley, artistic and general director of the festival will also join these discussions, giving an insightful, "behind the scenes" look into the productions.

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of opera and culture while enjoying the company of fellow Yale alumni. Don`t miss out on this exciting and enriching trip to Cooperstown with Yale Alumni College.

Accommodations will be at the Otesaga Resort, overlooking Lake Otsego. The picturesque views and exquisite amenities leave nothing to be desired. Additional accommodations are available at two adjacent hotels, The White House Inn and the Lake Front Hotel.
